Before Antietam

He enlisted as Sergeant in Company I, 155th Pennsylvania Infantry on 2 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 11 November 1862, was in action at Fredericksburg, VA, and promoted to First Lieutenant in February 1863. At Chancellorsville, VA (May 1863), he commanded the Brigade pioneer corps. He was discharged 24 June 1863.
