He enlisted in Company A, First Delaware Infantry on 2 October 1861 at Wilmington, DE. He was promoted to Corporal on 20 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was appointed Sergeant on 1 March 1864, to Hospital Steward 1 October 1864 and 2nd Lieutenant, Company B on 26 December 1864. He was promoted to First Lieutenant at age 25 on 31 May 1865.
