He enlisted as a Private in Company A, First Delaware Infantry at age 27 on 7 August 1861 at Wilmington, DE.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by a gunshot to his right elbow in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 22 September but died there of wounds on 16 October 1862.
