A farmer in Ashley County, he enlisted in Company A, 3rd Arkansas Infantry at Portland, Arkansas on May 20, 1861. He was promoted to Third Corporal on April 29, 1862.

He was wounded and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was confined at Fort McHenry, MD until exchanged on March 13, 1863, then furloughed for ninety days to recover from wounds, April 28, 1863. No further military record.
