He enlisted in Company B, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, at Berlin, Arkansas, June 9, 1861.

He was wounded in the thigh and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland until exchanged at Fort Monroe, Virginia, March 13, 1863; then furloughed to Arkansas in April 1863.
