He enlisted in Company C, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, at Monticello, Arkansas on March 22, 1862 and transferred to Company K in 1862.

He was wounded and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland until exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Virginia on November 10, 1862. He retired to the Invalid Corps at Camden, Arkansas, in 1863.
