Enlisted in Company D, 3rd Arkansas Infantry at Selma, Arkansas on June 20, 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the leg and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland until exchanged at Aikens Landing, Virginia, November 2, 1862 and furloughed for forty days to recover from wounds on December 2, 1862.

After the War

In 1878, a probate case concerning his father's will (or lack of) was heard in the Arkansas Supreme Court. A published summary from it shows West by 1874 had been declared non compos (mentis) - not of sound mind or not legally competent - and described him as a "lunatic". See also Arrington v.
