He enlisted in Company E, 3rd Arkansas Infantry at Champagnolle, Arkansas on June 20, 1861.

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was detailed to guard duty at Richmond, Virginia on June 29, 1863 as unfit for field service, and retired to the Invalid Corps on July 12, 1864.
