He enlisted in Company I, 3rd Arkansas Infantry at Tulip, Arkansas on June 25, 1861. He was promoted to First Corporal on February 22, 1862.

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Third Lieutenant on December 20, 1862. He was again wounded, at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 2, 1863. He was paroled at Lynchburg, Virginia on April 15, 1865.
