He enlisted in Company L, 3rd Arkansas Infantry at Latonia, Arkansas and was appointed Third Sergeant, on July 1, 1861. He was reduced to the ranks on October 1, 1861.

He was wounded in the left leg and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on September 27, 1862, and dropped from the rolls on February 29, 1864.
