Before Antietam

Before the War he was a successful fur hunter and merchant. In April 1861 he was Colonel of the 7th Ohio Regiment at Cross Lanes WV, and he commanded the 3rd Brigade/Shields' Division at Winchester and Port Republic. In May 1862 he was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers.

On the Campaign

He commanded the First Brigade in the Third Division/Fifth (V) Corps, in reserve on the 17th at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He continued to lead the Brigade at Fredericksburg, where he was wounded, and at Chancellorsville. He later commanded the defenses of Baltimore.

After the War

He was Postmaster of Baltimore.
