Before Sharpsburg
He was a 23 year old single clerk in New Orleans when he enlisted in the 2nd Company, Washington Artillery on May 26, 1861 in New Orleans. He was promoted to Sergeant on April 1, 1862.

He was with the Company at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was detailed on recruiting service on January 3, 1863 and back in March. He was discharged by order of the Secretary of War on July 4, 1863.
