Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted in Company E, First Louisiana Volunteers on April 25, 1861 in New Orleans. He was promoted to 3rd Corporal on April 28, 1862, but reduced to ranks May 20. Promoted again, to Sergeant, on September 1, 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was elected Junior 2nd Lieutenant on September 23, 1862. He was again reduced to the ranks on March 30, 1863 "by reason of having been pronounced unqualified for that position by a Board Examiner". Promoted to Sergeant Major of the Regiment on August 1, 1863.
