Before Sharpsburg
He was a 22 year old clerk in New Orleans when he enlisted in Company I, First Louisiana Infantry on May 4, 1861 in New Orleans. He was absent on detached service at Headquarters, 3rd Brigade, Portsmouth, VA to about January 1862. He was appointed 2nd Sergeant on April 28, 1862. He was absent detailed as a nurse to about 1 September 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was admitted October 12, 1862 to No. 5 US Army General Hospital at Frederick, MD. He was listed as a prisoner of war at Ft. McHenry, MD on October 14, 1862. He was declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing,VA on November 10, 1862. He was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant on March 25, 1863. He was captured at Mechanicsville, VA on June 2 or 3, 1864. Received at White House, VA on June 11, 1864, but escaped on October 18, 1864 froPoint Lookout, MD. He was sent to the Provost Marshal, New Orleans on April 1, 1865 as a "rebel deserter" and released on taking the Oath of Allegiance on April 22.
