Before Sharpsburg
He had been a 20 year old clerk in New Orleans when he enlisted in the First Company, Washington Artillery on May 7, 1862 in Richmond, VA.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
Furloughed for wounds after Sharpsburg, but back with the battery by November. He was wounded again and captured at Fredericksburg, VA on May 3, 1863, and sent to Fort Delaware on May 7. He was exchanged at City Point, VA on May 23, 1863 and returned to his unit. He was paroled at Madison, FL on May 16, 1865.
