He enlisted in Company B, 2nd Louisiana Infantry on May 9, 1861 in New Orleans. He was appointed First Lieutenant on 1 July 1862.

He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
His leg was amputated and he died while a prisoner on 19 October 1862.
