He enlisted on 7 September 1861 in Company A, 4th Rhode Island Infantry in Providence.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was in hospital at Knoxville, MD until January 1863. He reenlisted 5 January 1864, and was wounded again, in action near Petersburg, VA, on 30 July 1864. He was absent sick until January 1865. He was transferred (consolidated) into Company G, 7th Rhode Island Infantry on 21 October 1864. He mustered out on 13 July 1865.
