From Newport, he enlisted on 13 September 1861 in Company A, 4th Rhode Island Infantry, as Corporal. He was promoted to First Sergeant, date not given. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, and transferred to Company G on 11 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was absent on Surgeon's Certificate until discharged in January 1863.
