From Wickford, he enlisted on 13 September 1861 in Company H, 4th Rhode Island Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal on 14 August 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded in action at Petersburg, VA on 30 July 1864, and absent recovering in July and August. He mustered out on 15 October 1864.
