Basic information from Dyer1. From Scituate, he enlisted on 9 September 1861 in Company C, 4th Rhode Island Infantry. He was promoted to Sergeant on 25 September, and to First Sergeant on 10 October. He was reduced to the ranks 15 February 1862, but reinstated as Sergeant, and assigned to the colors on 16 August 1862. He was absent in hospitals until he deserted from Emory Hospital, Washington, DC on 29 October 1862.
