He enlisted in Providence on 19 September 1861 in Company K, 4th Rhode Island Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He was paroled and sent to Alexandria, VA in November 1864. He reenlisted on 5 February 1864, and transferred (consolidated) into Company B, 7th Rhode Island Infantry on 21 October 1864. He mustered out on 13 July 1865.
