Before Antietam

Age 20, he enlisted in New York City on 25 April 1861 and mustered on 9 May as a Private in Company E, 5th New York Infantry - Duryee's Zouvaes. He was discharged on 9 November to take a commission as 2nd Lieutenant of Company C, 5th Maryland Infantry, which he accepted, to date from 10 October 1861. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 9 September 1862 and transferred to Company E.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

After the War

He was originally buried in Keedysville, MD, then reinterred in the new National Cemetery in about 1867.

His service from the State of New York,1 as Magnus Molkte, and Wilmer,2 who lists him as Magness Moltke. Burial details from the History,2 as ___ Moltrie. His gravesite is on Findagrave; his stone has him as Magnus Molkte. Thanks to Larry Clemens for the poke to look further into Lt. Moltke.
