Before Sharpsburg

He was commissioned into the US Army in 1846, served in the Mexican War, and resigned in July 1861. He was made Major of CSA Cavalry, then LCol. of the 8th Texas Cavalry Regiment. In January 1862 he was appointed Brigadier General and served in the Department of North Carolina.

On the Campaign

Commanded Walker's Division of Longstreet's Command.

The rest of the War

In November 1862 he was promoted to Major General and transferred to the Trans Mississippi with command of a (which?) division of Texas infantry, and fought in the Red River campaign. He then commanded the District of West Louisiana and later the District of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

After the War

He fled to Mexico, later returned to US, and was US consul general at Bogota and special commissioner to the Pan-American Convention.
