Before Antietam

Enlisted as First Sergeant, Company C, 2nd Maine Infantry on 28 May 1861. Promoted First Lieutenant 30 August 1861 and Captain on 21 June 1862. In action at 1st Bull Run, Yorktown, Hanover Courthouse, Gaines' Mill, Malvern Hill, and 2nd Bull Run before the Maryland Campaign.

On the Campaign

Commanded his Company at South Mountain and Antietam.

The rest of the War

Mustered out 9 June 1863. Enrolled as Captain, Company F, 31st Maine Infantry on 15 March 1864. Saw action at the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Courthouse, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Bethesda Church and Petersburg. Mortally wounded in action at 2nd Reams Station near Petersburg, VA. Promoted Major but not mustered at that rank.
