Before Antietam
"An old Crimean soldier" - he had served in the British Army 1851-54, seeing action at Alma, Balaclava, and Inkerman, and came to Lowell, MA in 1856. By then a printer in New York City, he enlisted in Company B, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry at age 30 in May 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant on 12 August 1861.
On the Campaign
He was the Regimental Color Bearer at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He was promoted again, to First Sergeant on 1 November 1862. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 30 March 1863. First Lieutenant 24 December 1863. Resigned 22 October 1864.
