A shoemaker from Salem, he enlisted in Company C, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry at age 43 on 11 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Discharged for disability 22 February 1863. Enlisted 15 August 1863 as a Private in Company F, 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, and mustered out 18 September 1865.
