He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Discharged for disability 22 February 1863. Enlisted 15 August 1863 as a Private in Company F, 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, and mustered out 18 September 1865.
