A shoemaker from Marblehead or Boston, he enlisted in Company C, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry at age 18 on 11 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the side in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Returned to duty 11 March 1863. Wounded in thigh in action on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. Returned to duty 8 October 1863. Reenlisted. Promoted Corporal 5 June 1865 but deserted 3 July 1865.

After the War

Cause of death suicide by hanging (at about age 63).
