A bootmaker in Medway, he enlisted in Company E, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry at age 35 in May 1861. Appointed First Sergeant 25 May 1861, to Sergeant 13 July, returned to First Sergeant 14 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the hand in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Discharged for wounds 14 January 1863.
