Before Antietam
A coppersmith in Roxbury, he enlisted as Corporal in Company I, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry at age 19 on 22 December 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the chin in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
Promoted to Sergeant on 9 October 1862. Discharged for wounds on 24 January 1863.
