Before Antietam

He studied law and was admitted to the Bar in May 1858. He first practiced in his father's firm in Boston, then his own firm from 1859. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company I, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry on 28 May 1861. Promoted First Lieutenant on 13 December and Captain on 17 August 1862.

The rest of the War

Resigned for illness (neuralgia) on 31 October 1862.

After the War

Died of illness 25 January 1866 in Dorcester.

He posted a bond for $200 to the Harvard Law School "due if expenses for attendance at the Harvard Law School are left unpaid" in September 1855, but apparently did not actually attend (citation from WorldCat).
