He enlisted in Company I, First New Jersey Infantry on 21 May 1861. Promoted Corporal on 4 June, but returned to Private 21 June 1861. Promoted Corporal again on 1 September 1862.

He was killed in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.
