He enrolled at age 30 as 2nd Lieutenant, Company E, First Kentucky Infantry (organized in Ohio) on 20 April 1861. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 3 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action - his "left leg shot off" - at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He mustered out on 3 June 1864 at expiration of his term.
