Before Antietam

He was a 17 year old clerk in Trenton at the 1860 Federal Census. He enlisted in Company C, 3rd New Jersey Militia for 3 months as a Fifer on 23 April 1861 and mustered out 31 July. He enlisted again, in Company B, 4th New Jersey Infantry for 3 years as a Musician on 5 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was listed as a deserter on 16 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty on 18 March 1863. He re-enlisted 26 December 1863, and was promoted Principal Musician on 31 March 1864.
