He enlisted in Company D, 2nd Delaware Infantry at age 35 as Sergeant on 13 June 1861 in Philadelphia.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was wounded in action at Fredericksburg, VA in December 1862, and promoted to First Lieutenant on 1 March 1863. Wounded again at the Nye River, VA on 12 May 1864. Absent at muster out in June 1864.
