He enlisted in Company D, 2nd Delaware Infantry at age 32 on 13 June 1861 in Philadelphia.

He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds at Frederick, MD on 8 October 1862 ,and was reinterred from burial in Frederick to the National Cemetery at Antietam before or during 1867.
