Before Antietam

He enlisted in Company E, 8th Ohio Infantry as First Sergeant at age 22 on 5 June 1861. He was appointed Sergeant Major of the Regiment on 1 May 1862.

On the Campaign

Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, Company H on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Promoted to First Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant on 4 March 1863. In his Report on the action at Gettysburg, Colonel Sawyer said his Adjutant "behaved with great gallantry, and rendered me every assistance." He mustered out with the Regiment on 13 July 1864.

After the War

By 1870 he was a grocer living in Wabash County, IN. He was a farmer there by the 1880 census, and carpenter in 1900.
