By 1857 he was working in the Naylor & Howard Hardware Store in Tiffin, OH. He enlisted in Company A, 8th Ohio Infantry at age 19 on 28 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Mustered out with his Company on 13 July 1864.
