He enlisted in Company C, 8th Ohio Infantry at age 18 on 1 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was discharged on 3 April 1863 on a Surgeon's Certificate of disability. He enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant, Company E, 136th Ohio Infantry for 100 days' service on 2 May 1864, and mustered out 31 August 1864.
