He enlisted in Company G, 8th Ohio Infantry as Corporal at age 21 on 5 June 1861 at Fremont, OH.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Discharged to enlist in Company A, 15th US Infantry on 4 November 1862. He is noted as having lost his left leg below the knee during the War (place not stated), perhaps 9 April 1865.

After the War

He lived the last 10 years of his life in the National Home for Disabled Veterans in Elizabeth City, VA.
