He enlisted in Company H, 8th Ohio Infantry at age 20 on 6 June 1861. Wounded at Winchester (May 1862). He was appointed Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

After the War

He was listed (as G.A. Vanasdell) as living in Three Rivers, MI at the time of the Regimental Reunion at Gettysburg in September 1887.
