He enlisted in Company K, 8th Ohio Infantry at age 19 on 5 June 1861. He was appointed Corporal on 15 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Promoted to Sergeant on 1 November 1862. He was discharged 27 May 1863 at Alexandria, VA on a Surgeon's Certificate of disability.
