He was a 24 year old unmarried laborer when he enlisted on 24 October 1861 in New Orleans as a Driver, 3rd Company, Battalion of Washington Artillery.
On the Campaign
He was reported missing in action on 18 September 1862 at Sharpsburg but had been captured there.
The rest of the War
He signed a parole at Sharpsburg on 24 September 1862 and requested to not be returned by exchange; his parole permitted him to travel to "any of the loyal States" with no record of where he went. Confederate records for April 1863 say he was "supposed killed" and his family made a claim for his final pay.
