He came to the US with his family at about age 4 in 1847. He enlisted 19 June 1861, at New Orleans in Company H (the Cheneyville Rifles), 8th Louisiana Infantry. Appointed [First?] Sergeant, from Private, 15 June 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

Basic information from Booth1. Details from family genealogists, some of whom have his middle name as Vousden. His brother, the Reverend Patrick Johnson Loftus (b. Castlebar 1841-1906) was also in the Company, served through the War, and named his son Andrew Vosden Loftus (1873 - 1924).
