He enlisted 19 June 1861, at Camp Moore, LA, in Company C, 8th Louisiana Infantry. He was a clerk, living in St. Martinville, LA, age 21 when enlisted, single.

He was wounded and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
