Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted 26 May 1861 in New Orleans, in the 3rd Company, Battalion of Washington Artillery. He was a clerk in New Orleans, giving his age as 32 years when enlisted, and single. He was promoted to 4th Corporal on 9 January 1862 and 5th Sergeant on 11 February 1862, by order of Maj. Walton.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was back with his Battery by January 1863. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 26 July 1863. He was present with his unit to January 1865, then on leave from 29 January to 22 February 1865.
