Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted 25 April 1861 in Company E, 9th Virginia Cavalry. He was promoted to Sergeant on 20 December 1861.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action on 15 September 1862 at Boonsboro, MD.
The rest of the War
He was exchanged 5 October 1862. Reported absent without leave in January and February 1864, and reduced back to Private on 1 August 1864. He was absent at the final roll of 1 October 1864 and paroled at Bowling Green on 16 May 1865.
