From Essex County, he enlisted 10 June 1861 in Company F, 9th Virginia Cavalry, then a 22 year old farmer.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action on 15 September 1862 at Boonsboro, MD.
The rest of the War
He was held at Ft. Delaware until exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was listed as absent without leave in October 1863, but otherwise present to the final roll of October 1864. He was a prisoner at Amelia Courthouse, VA on 6 April 1865 and released at Pt. Lookout, MD on 13 June 1865.
After the War
He married, by then a widower, Virginia F. Gray in Richmond County, VA in 1870.
