Before Antietam

A 20 year old resident of Newburyport, MA, he enrolled at Private, Company B, 35th Massachusetts Infantry, and mustered in August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was in action on South Mountain and was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was discharged for disability from wounds on 21 November 1862. He reenlisted 12 March 1864 in Company H, 59th Massachusetts Infantry, but the Adjutant General's record says he deserted (date not given) and did not return.

After the War

He was living in Hampton, NH in 1884. An Augustus H. Batchelder was listed as an entry clerk at Murphy, Grant & Co., San Francisco, CA in a City Directory of 1893. He may have been a resident of the Soldier's Home at Togus, ME by the time of his death in 1910.
