Before Antietam

From Exeter, he enlisted in Company C, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 22 April 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was discharged 26 January 1863 to enlist in the Regular US Army (enlistment dated 15 December 1862 at Ft. Hamilton, NY by Capt. DuPont). He served in Batteries B and E of the 5th US Artillery. He reenlisted on 23 January 1864 at Martinsburg, VA at the end of his original term of service.

After the War

His name is on a homestead (land) patent in Sheridan County, Montana, issued in 1920.
