Eugene Robert Witter

He'd moved with his family from his native New York to a farm at Exeter in Green County, WI by 1850, and in 1860 was a 19 year old farmer living with his parents and 2 younger siblings on their Exeter farm. He enlisted on 22 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company C, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry.

He was wounded by a gunshot to his right shoulder in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862 and may have been at least briefly captured there.

He was discharged for wounds on 8 May 1863 and was granted a pension for disability.

By 1870 he was farmer at Mazeppa in Wabasha County, MN but in 1875 he was in Forest, Rice County, MN. By 1880 and to at least 1900 he was farming at Morristown, Rice County, MN. He'd finally retired there by 1910.

He married Elsie Jane Edwards (1842-1906) in November 1865 in Albany, Green County, WI and they had 6 children: 5 sons, then one daughter, Almira.
